About This Place

Ha Long Bay Restaurant, located at 5944 34th St N in St. Petersburg, FL, is a vibrant culinary gem specializing in traditional Chinese and Vietnamese cuisines with an impressive focus on authentic dim sum. This restaurant offers a warm, bustling atmosphere that nods to the classic dim sum experience, complete with the nostalgic element of pushcart service—a rare find in the Tampa Bay area that immediately immerses diners in the lively ritual of selecting bite-sized delicacies as they roll by.

The menu at Ha Long Bay is a richly textured journey through the flavors of both Chinese and Vietnamese kitchens. For dim sum lovers, the Shumai Shrimp Dumpling and Black Bean Spare Ribs promise a satisfying mix of tender, savory bites, though some diners have noted a slight greasiness that might temper the experience for those seeking lighter fare. The Peking Duck and Roast Duck Dim Sum showcase the kitchen’s commitment to traditional recipes, offering crispy skin and flavorful meat that melts delightfully on the tongue. Other standout dishes like the Fried Shrimp Ball and BBQ Pork deliver comforting, savory notes that enhance the overall feast.

Vietnamese specialties elevate the dining experience with delicately balanced salads such as the Lotus Rootless Salad with Pork & Shrimp and the vibrant Shrimp & Pork Salad, each brimming with fresh herbs and a tantalizing blend of textures. The Vietnamese-style soups, including the Hot & Sour Canh Chua and Watercress with Pork and Tofu Soup, provide a fragrant, soothing warmth, perfect for cleansing the palate between more robust dishes. Angel Hair Vermicelli dishes topped with charbroiled meatballs or shrimp cakes are bright, fresh, and uniquely satisfying—the kind of authentic meals that speak to the heart of Vietnamese home cooking.

The dining room itself is inviting and clean, decorated thoughtfully to offer a relaxed yet lively ambiance that suits both casual meals and special outings. Guests often mention the friendly, patient service and the charm of watching carts glide through the restaurant, creating an interactive and engaging meal scene. While some diners have shared that portions for certain dim sum items can be modest and service hiccups occur occasionally, the overall sentiment is of a locally cherished establishment where diners can indulge in a diverse range of Asian flavors. The restaurant’s bustling vibe, coupled with the occasional presence of families captivated by the fish aquarium, crafts a welcoming environment that feels both traditional and lively.

For those seeking a nuanced, savory escape into Chinese and Vietnamese culinary traditions, Ha Long Bay Restaurant offers a rich palette of flavors, from the deep umami in their Beef Chow Fun to the fragrant, delicate layering of sticky rice wrapped in lotus leaf. Whether you're drawn by the dim sum carts or the vibrant, fresh Vietnamese salads and soups, this spot embodies a heartfelt culinary adventure that resonates with authenticity and community spirit. It’s a place where the interplay of textures and bold flavors invites you to savor each bite thoughtfully and return for more discoveries.

The dim sum was decent but nothing special. I noticed the staff placed the dim sum trays on a dining room table before putting them in the cart, so the food wasn’t really hot, just slightly warm. Most dishes were a bit greasy, and the spare ribs were quite fatty. I think It’s okay for a quick meal.

*Hands down the best dim sum in the Tampa Bay area! This place stands out as the only dim sum restaurant in the area that still offers the traditional push cart service—an authentic touch that really elevates the experience. There's something nostalgic and fun about seeing the different dishes roll by and picking what looks good in the moment. We've tried Yummy House and several other dim sum spots nearby, but none of them come close. We always find ourselves coming back here for the quality, consistency, and atmosphere. The food is fresh, flavorful, and served hot, with a wide variety of classic dim sum favorites to choose from. The prices are very reasonable for the quality and portion sizes, making it a great value as well. If you're craving real dim sum in Tampa Bay, this is the place to go.

So many options, so many choices! This place was a solid 8/10 for me. The restaurant was clean and well decorated. The most stand out items to me were the pork dumplings, crab shrimp dumpling and the sticky rice wrapped in leaf. Those flavors danced on my tongue. I was disappointed they were out of plum wine and ended up not getting any cocktails. Overall, it was good. I want to go back to try the roast duck, so see you soon!

Not many choices for Dim Sum in the area but luckily this place is pretty good. They just need to up the game a little to be greatest. Sticky rice in lotus leaf is good but the portion is tiny. The Har Gou lacks flavor. The Beef Chow Fun was really good.

This Chinese and Vietnamese restaurant is busy with locals. We loved the carts going around with dim sum, steamed rice, fumplings and more. Our wait person served us water and Beer and oatiently waited for us to order. We received a few items but my soup never arrived . They had run out of green tea and we tried a delicious getanium tea. The fish aquarium is a great place fir kids to sit and be entertained as well as for people waiting for a table on this busy Sunday Accessible restroom with 4ftx4 ft space Accessible entry with push door. Free van accessible parking in front with curb cuts

This review is strictly covering our dim sum experience at Ha Long Bay. I guess I will be going against the grain here but let me be one of the few to advise against being fooled by the 3.7 stars (if you subscribe to the "3-star Asian restaurant theory," this would be an accurate reflection of that). Ha Long Bay is a great restaurant for dim sum whether you're new to the dim sum culture or an experienced connoisseur via birth-right indoctrination. The restaurant sits off of 34th Street in St. Petersburg which sees a decent amount of traffic throughout the day. There is a two-row lot that sits in front of the entire plaza which is only one directional; the entry to this actually further up along the plaza. The parking immediately in front of the restaurant can get pretty full, however the rest of the plaza is fairly vacated for this time of day - so I definitely recommend parking up in this area if you identify that the aforementioned area being fully occupied if you don't want to come back around into the parking lot. There are several large tables that can accommodate big parties (we came with a group of 12 [7 adults and 5 kids] and were seated comfortably at one of their large round tables with a lazy-susan/turntable). There were also smaller round tables and booths throughout. We arrived around 1015 and didn't have to wait like we usually do with the dim sum restaurants in the Northeast. By 1100 the dim sum patrons were coming in droves and the dim sum service was in full swing. Despite the amount of patrons, the restaurant maintained a good rotation of their tables which mitigated any sort of wait time. There is a pink service slip that sits at your table to account for the various dim sum trays ordered a la carte (literally). The aunties and young gentlemen do a great job bringing around the carts, so we didn't find ourselves needing to place in any special orders through the servers. The restaurant was also incredibly clean when it came to their silverware and dishes. Ha Long Bay also exceeded expectations when it came to the flavor of their dim sum. The flavors of the dishes were on par with the dim sum that you find in NYC/Jersey. All the trays appeared fresh and even came with a spicy kick to their traditional dishes. Additional spicy condiments and chili oils were also available at the table so you don't have to go through the trouble of flagging down a server to get some. Overall, Ha Long Bay is a great restaurant - and if you're looking for dim sum in the St. Pete/Clearwater area this is it!
